Grant Program
The storm sure did a number on the beach – a lot of the sand was swept away! All three buildings flooded and water came up onto the road, but the flood-proofing worked and the damages were minor. The property owners are grateful, and town officials are delighted that those buildings are still on the tax rolls.

Managed Retreat
Everyone finally accepted the buy-out, although you had to dig deep into town coffers. The dunes appeared to minimize damage to downtown and protect the road. The beach did experience some erosion during the storm, and may need more sand. Most people agree now that the buy-outs were a good idea – those buildings would likely have been destroyed, and the area where they once stood is now an essential part of the beachscape.

The seawall failed in the storm, and the waterfront buildings experienced major damage! The wall can be rebuilt, but it needs to be a lot higher and stronger. The property owners want to rebuild and are clamoring for the improved seawall. The beach nourishment is getting expensive too, because it now needs to happen every year.
