Game of Floods - Town Beach
50 Year Results - Storm
Assignment: Locate your chosen action(s) in the list below and record your results in your notebook.

Beach Nourishment
The storm eroded the beach completely away, wrecked all the beachfront properties, and washed out part of the road. The engineers say it might not be possible to restore it – you are forced to give up on the beach and start looking at a sea wall to protect downtown and the road.

Grant Program
The storm washed away one of the buildings and seriously damaged the other two. One of the property owners is rebuilding with updated flood-proofing; the other two are giving up and relocating. The town is looking into protecting the road with a seawall, although that is expected to increase beach erosion. The beach is basically gone, anyway. It didn’t last forever, but your investment in floodproofing those properties bought you several more decades of keeping them intact and on the town’s tax rolls.

Build a Seawall
The rebuilt seawall failed in the storm, and all the buildings were swept away! The road was also washed out. Luckily the shops on the other side of the road are on higher ground. The beachfront properties cannot be rebuilt, and the road may need to be elevated. The beach is basically gone, although there is some hope that it can be restored now that the buildings are gone.

Managed Retreat
The storm eroded the beach, broke through the dunes, and washed out part of the road, but no other properties were damaged. The town decides to fix the road and double down on restoring the dunes and replenishing the beach with sand – this beach is important to everyone, and it’s now obvious that the dunes are protecting the rest of the town! The decision to replace the buildings with dunes was expensive at the time, but it really saved the beach.

Grants + Seawall
The rebuilt seawall failed in the storm, and all the buildings were swept away – including the elevated one! The road was also washed out. The investment in protecting those properties did preserve them on the tax rolls for a while, but they won’t be rebuilt now. The beach is gone, and with the loss of the beach, downtown is in decline.
