SCOUTING EVENT
WITH PROJECT OCEANOLOGY

April 25, 2026 | 11:00 AM - 4:30 PM | Ages 11-17

Scouts will literally and figuratively get their hands wet as they investigate the living and nonliving components of Long Island Sound, while participating in our flagship environmental monitoring program aboard the Enviro-Lab Research Vessel.  Scouts will study living organisms in the stern of the boat by hauling a trawl net, doing a plankton tow and pulling a lobster pot. In the bow of the boat, they’ll learn how to use a wide range of oceanographic equipment as they investigate physical and chemical aspects of the estuary, including temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity, pH, and CO2.

In the lab, scouts will make their own plankton net, collect a sample and observe plankton under the microscope.  Scouts will also investigate the underwater topography of the sea floor.

To prepare for this trip: Participants should wear closed toed shoes and dress for the weather.  Remember, it's typically colder and windier by the water.  Dressing in layers is recommended.  Bring a lunch or snack to enjoy during the break.  Life jackets will be provided.

Scouts set sail on an Introduction to Oceanography boat cruise and dive into hands-on lab work to earn their Oceanography Merit Badge!

How to Earn Your Oceanography Merit Badge with Project Oceanology

If you’re working toward the Oceanography Merit Badge, here’s what you’ll need to do:

  • Bring your blue card: Each scout should arrive with a merit badge application card (blue card) filled out with their name, address, and troop number.

  • Include a return envelope: Please also bring a self‑addressed, stamped envelope.

  • Submit your card: Leave your completed blue card with your Project Oceanology instructor on the day of your program.

One of the final requirements for the badge is Requirement #8: writing a 500‑word essay about your experience aboard Project Oceanology’s research vessel. Since most scouts won’t finish this essay before leaving, it should be emailed afterward to Project Oceanology’s merit badge counselor at projecto@oceanology.org.

Once your essay has been submitted and reviewed, the merit badge counselor will mail your signed blue card back to you using the envelope you provided.
