WONDERS OF LONG ISLAND SOUND
NOVEMBER 12, 2025 | 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Project Oceanology Presents: Wonders of Long Island Sound
Art Exhibit & Community Celebration
Join Project Oceanology for an evening celebrating art, science, and the natural beauty of the Long Island Sound watershed and its inhabitants on Wednesday, November 12, 2025 from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at Project Oceanology, 1084 Shennecossett Road, Groton. Wonders of Long Island Sound showcases the work of four exceptional artists — Lavanya Shubhakar, Lorrie Banks, Jerelyn Smestad, and Kelsey Lopez — whose paintings and mixed media pieces are inspired by the sea, its ecosystems, and the life it sustains.
The exhibit invites visitors to experience Long Island Sound from new perspectives — through color, texture, and emotion — and reflects Project Oceanology’s mission to foster environmental stewardship through discovery and education.
A short recognition program at 6:00 PM will celebrate the artists and express our gratitude for their creative contributions to this special exhibit.
Our featured artist, Lavanya Shubhakar, is known for her vibrant and multicultural works that celebrate connection, culture, and nature. Her art is exhibited at other locations in Connecticut, including Children of the World at the Otis Library in Norwich. Learn more about Lavanya’s work at lavanyashubhakarart.com
In addition to the main exhibit, guests are invited to visit tables hosted by:
-
CT Sea Grant, highlighting their Arts Support Awards Grant Program, which funds and supports artists who create works that explore, interpret, or communicate themes related to marine and coastal environments, connecting art with ocean and coastal science.
-
Author Nicholas Checker, of New London, who will be present to share his books a reading from his novella The Duel — a story about life on a coral reef told from the perspective of its marine inhabitants.
This event is free and open to the public, with light refreshments and snacks provided.
Please RSVP by November 7, 2025 to marketing@oceanology.org or call (860) 445-9007.
Come enjoy an evening of art, ocean inspiration, and community, and help us celebrate the Wonders of Long Island Sound.
