The breakwater did its job, and protected Windy Point from the largest waves! Water levels still rose alarmingly and low-lying homes were flooded. Many residents were trapped on Windy Point when rising waters blocked the only road out. There was panic, but no deaths. The breakwater is popular – it provides fish and oyster habitat, has slowed beach erosion, and hasn’t needed any serious maintenance yet, although the town has been warned to budget for this in a few decades. The storm scoured out areas down-current of the breakwater that will have to be replenished with sand.
