Game of Floods - Town Beach

Welcome to the Town Council! Help make the Town Beach more Resilient!

Part 3: Make Town Beach More Resilient!

You have just been elected to the town council!  You and your fellow councilors must agree on a resilience plan for the Town Beach that addresses the flooding challenges, while staying within your budget.  You will have to advocate for your character's priorities, while also learning about the needs of others on the council and then coming to agreement.

Assignment: Follow the steps below.

Step One:

Select one or more of the possible actions below to make the Town Beach more resilient to the threat of flooding! You may not go over your budget.

On your worksheet, be sure to record the actions you chose and any funds that remain.

Possible Actions & Costs

Beach Nourishment

Cost: $$ (2)

Add sand to the beach!  This will improve the beach experience and expand the beach again.  It may have to be repeated every few years.

Grants Program

Cost: $$ (2)

Start a grant program to help property owners elevate and floodproof their properties.  Elevated buildings are less likely to be damaged in storms.

Build a Seawall

Cost: $$$ (3)

The seawall would protect beachfront properties from damage and flooding, but it may accelerate beach erosion.

Retreat from the Flood Plain

Cost: $$$$$$ (6)

Offer to buy out waterfront homes and businesses, and replace them with sand dunes.  Sand dunes would help prevent coastal erosion and protect inland parts of the town, but this is an expensive option, and property owners might not want to sell.

Possible Action Combos:

Nourishment: $$ (2)

Grants Program: $$ (2)

Seawall: $$$ (3)

Retreat from the Beach: $$$$$$ (6)

Nourishment + Grants: $$$$ (4)

Nourishment + Seawall: $$$$$ (5)

Grants + Seawall: $$$$$ (5)

Step 2a: 5 Year Results

Determine if there was a storm at 5 years by rolling two dice and adding up the results. A storm occurs if you do not roll at least a 5. Click on the corresponding link below to see the results. Record your results in your notebook.
