Green Landscaping
Green landscaping features have been installed in several problem areas. They look great, and they really seem to help with flooding from everyday rainstorms! The landscaping was no help during the storm – rain gardens aren’t big enough to handle floodwaters from the river. Homes and streets were flooded, damages were severe, and mold is now a health problem.

Restore the Wetland
The town used bulldozers and backhoes to reconnect the river to its old floodplain upstream. When the storm hit, the wetland worked! Water spread out across the floodplain. Foggy Hollow River still overflowed and flooded streets and basements, but the flood levels (and the damages) were lower than predicted. The wetland was not very popular before the storm, but now people are interested in learning more.

Managed Retreat
The town offered to buy the row of houses closest to the river and replace them with a riverside park. Some owners accepted the offer, but others did not. When the storm hit, the river flooded and the remaining houses closest to the river were destroyed. More people moved away – only a few houses are left near the river.

Wetland + Levee
The wetland and the levee did their jobs- Foggy Hollow River didn’t flood! There was still flooding in the neighborhood from the torrential rain, but residents were delighted – they credit the levee with saving their community. The restored wetland didn’t get as much attention but also played a crucial role. The town had used bulldozers and backhoes to reconnect the river to its old floodplain upstream. As the river rose, water spread out across the floodplain instead of surging into Foggy Hollow. The river levels were still very high, but the levee easily contained the floodwaters.
