Assignment: Read the potential flood threats and flood adaptation strategies for Foggy Hollow below. Discuss the pros and cons of each flood adaptation strategy within your group. Foggy Hollow is a residential neighborhood along Foggy Hollow Creek. It's located in a flood plain, and experiences frequent flooding during rainstorms. The wet environment contributes to health problems such as mold in some homes.
The Threat 1: Increased Flooding
Foggy Hollow already floods frequently when it rains a lot, and it's just going to get worse. Scientists predict that as a result of climate change, CT will get a lot wetter, and sever storms will be more frequent. Since 1958, New England has already seen a 71% increase in the number of intense rainstorms.
Foggy Hollow needs to find a good way to manage all the extra water. This can be done by trying to find ways to absorb it with wetlands, rain gardens, and swales, by trying to keep it out with a levee, or by trying to live with it by making homes more flood resistant.
