Green Landscaping

Green landscaping features have been installed in several problem areas. They look great! Some homeowners have noticed that they help keep water away from their houses when it rains. A local non-profit has started partnering with the town to build even more rain gardens in the area.

Restore the Wetland

The town used bulldozers and backhoes to reconnect the river to its old floodplain upstream. It’s hard to say whether this will help with flooding since there hasn’t been a big storm, but it’s a beautiful natural area. Foggy Hollow residents are not too impressed so far. At least one upstream resident is complaining that it’s a breeding ground for mosquitos.

Managed Retreat

The town offered to buy the row of houses closest to the river and replace them with a riverside park. Some owners accepted the offer, but others did not. The park isn’t built yet because the houses are not all gone. Some people are angry that the town is spending so much money on relocating just a few houses.

Wetland + Green Landscaping

The town used bulldozers and backhoes to reconnect the river to its old floodplain upstream, and installed rain gardens and other features in some of the problem areas. They look great! Residents are skeptical about the wetland, if they are aware of it at all, but they like the rain gardens. Some people are reporting they reduce flooding when it rains, and a local nonprofit is partnering with the town to build even more green features like rain gardens and swales.
