Elevate & Floodproof

The plant flooded during the storm, but as a result of the elevation project, the plant was barely damaged!  It was up and running again very quickly.  Everyone is pleased that the upgrades worked.  The storm did cause a release of raw sewage into the bay – the oyster grower is furious.

Marsh Restoration

The plant did experience minor flooding, but a lot less than expected, and only a small sewage leak was detected.  The water levels were lower than in areas not protected by marshes.  The plant manager grudgingly concedes that the marsh is helping protect the plant.  Environmentalists credit the marsh for improving water quality in the bay and providing fish habitat.

Seawall & Pumping System

The water levels were very high, but the seawall and pump system worked perfectly during the storm, and the plant was not damaged.  Everyone praises your foresight – you saved the town a lot of money by protecting the sewage treatment plant!  The marsh that used to surround the plant is shrinking.

Managed Retreat

Your critics were furious when you built the new plant, because the old plant was not at the end of its lifespan.  When the storm hit, the old site flooded while the new plant stayed high and dry!  Your town gets some congratulatory media attention for its foresight, although your critics still grumble that a seawall would have been less expensive.

Marsh & Elevate

The flooding was less than predicted because the marsh protected the plant from the worst of the storm, and there was no damage because all the critical machinery was elevated well above the flood zone.  Everyone is happy that the plant wasn’t damaged, and environmentalists credit the marsh for improving water quality in the bay and providing fish habitat.

Seawall & Elevate

The water levels were very high, but the seawall and pump system worked perfectly during the storm, and the plant was not damaged.  The pumps and other critical machinery was elevated, although that turned out not to be needed this time – it stayed dry inside the wall.  Everyone praises your foresight – you saved the town a lot of money by protecting the sewage treatment plant!  The marsh that used to surround the plant is shrinking.

Marsh & Seawall

The water levels were very high, but the seawall and pump system worked perfectly during the storm, and the plant was not damaged.  Everyone praises your foresight – you saved the town a lot of money by protecting the sewage treatment plant!  The marsh is doing okay – the seawall construction seems to have affected the drainage and part of it is shrinking again. Environmentalists credit the marsh for improving water quality in the bay and providing fish habitat.
