Science will take on new meaning as you roll up your sleeves, get your hands wet and have fun. Requirements towards Oceanography (Boy Scouts), Animal Habitats (Girl Scouts), and other nature and environmental badges can be incorporated into the activities. Badge counselor available.

Overnight Package: Oceanographic Cruise, Shore Program, Laboratory Study
$125 per participant (student or chaperone)
Become a marine scientist for the weekend! Sleep over in Project Oceanology's waterfront hostel while you study the local marine environment. Begin your journey aboard our Envirolab research vessel, where you will get a fascinating introduction to some of the organisms that live in Long Island Sound. After dinner, learn all about the wonders of plankton in your evening lab. The next morning, put your boots or water shoes on and spend some time exploring the shoreline.
Participants must bring their own sleeping bag, pillow, towel, dinner, and breakfast. Meals can be provided for an additional cost. Please inquire about more information.

8:00 - 9:00 AM Breakfast
9:00 - 11:30 AM Shore Program
Day Package: Oceanographic Cruise and Laboratory Study
$75 per participant (student or chaperone)
Become a marine scientist for the day! Head out into Long Island Sound aboard our oceanographic research vessel. Capture sea creatures using a trawl net and a plankton net, and sample the physical environment using real oceanographic research equipment. Back in the lab, continue your study of Long Island Sound with the lab of your choice. For example, you might focus on biological oceanography as you use microscopes to study plankton, or you might focus on physical oceanography as you try to recreate Davy Jones' Locker.
Participants must bring their own lunch. Please inquire about more information.
Sample Schedule
10:00 - 12:30 AM Lab Study: Plankton and Layered Ocean
12:30 - 1:00 PM Lunch
1:00 - 3:30 PM Boat: Oceanographic Cruise
Shore Program and Laboratory Study
$50 per participant (student or chaperone)
The rocky shore is a rugged environment, battered by surf and changing seasons. Search for organisms such as crabs and snails under rocks and in the seaweed and determine how they are daptated to live in such a harsh environment. Discuss how humans impact local habitats and help protect these important habitats by participating in a beach clean up. In the lab, use microscopes to examine the different types of plankton and the role of plankton in the food web. Then, study the physical environment of Long Island Sound by trying to recreate Davy Jones' Locker.
Participants must bring their own lunch. Please inquire about more information.
