Cruise the waters of Long Island Sound as you make new friends, conduct ocean science research, and have fun! Everyday campers will climb aboard our boats, whether our research vessel Envirolab to deploy the trawl net, or our small boats to explore local salt marshes and sandy beaches. Campers will also study and investigate rocky intertidal zones and nearshore marine life. Under the guidance of professional marine scientists, campers will use oceanographic research equipment such as sediment corers, salinity meters, nutrient test kits, dissolved oxygen meters, otter trawls, and seine nets.

Team-building and leadership activities will be woven into daily life as you forge lifelong friendships with your fellow campers and explore Long Island Sound! Each day consists of ample time outdoors working from an outdoor classroom space, the shore and aboard our boats.

MSRE

Marine Science
Research Experience

Duration: 1 Week Overnight Camp (Sunday - Friday)

Grades: Campers Entering Grades 6 - 12

Cost: $975 (Discounts: Military $50; Multi-Session & Multi-Sibling 10%)

Session 1

Session 2

July 10 - July 15 (Grades 6 - 8)

July 31 - August 5 (Grades 9 - 12); 4 Spots Left

Marine Science Research Camp is a unique opportunity for students to participate in authentic science by designing and conducting their own independent research projects. Under the mentorship of professional marine scientists, students will learn how to use a wide range of oceanographic research equipment and techniques aboard boats, on the shore, and in our waterfront marine laboratories. Students and staff in this program become a close-knit community of scientists and forge lifelong connections as they design, conduct, and troubleshoot their experiments, analyze and communicate their results, and live together in our waterfront hostel. At the end of the program, students will present their findings in a poster presentation or symposium to their families, mentors, and peers.

Day Camps

DAY CAMPS

OEA

July 11 - July 15 (Hidden Habitats);  4 spots left

August 1 - August 5 (Animal Adaptations); waitlist

August 15 - August 19 (Art & Science); 4 spots left

All themed weeks consist of time aboard one of our research vessels and our fleet of Carolina skiffs. Campers will set plankton and trawl nets to explore the biodiversity living in Long Island Sound and sample the water quality in the estuary. Each day consists of a combination of hands-on activities that take place in our classrooms, along the shore or aboard our boats.

Eco Engineers: Campers will look to nature for inspiration as they search for solutions to engineering challenges. Campers will design their own wind turbine and try their hand at operating a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV).

Hidden Habitats: Squish through the salt marsh, climb on the rocky shore, and comb through the beach as you explore a different habitat each day!

Animal Adaptations: Campers will collect and observe animals from Long Island Sound and discover how they are adapted to find food and protect themselves from predators!

Art & Science: This camp is the perfect combination of art and science! Each day campers will explore the marine environment by boat and connect with nature through a combination of habitat exploration, nature journaling, art projects, and water sampling. Campers will look to nature for inspiration as they create 3D collages from found objects along the beach and use seine nets to catch nearshore fish. It’s the best of both worlds!

SeaTech

Undersea Technology Camp

Duration: 1 Week Day Camp (Monday- Friday)

Grades: Campers Entering Grades 6 - 12

Cost: $500 (Discounts: Military $50; Multi-Session & Multi-Sibling 10%)

July 18 - July 22 (Grades 9 - 12)

August 8 - August 12 (Grades 9 - 12)

Dive into the technology of ocean exploration! Investigate the brackish environment of Long Island Sound using marine technology to collect samples of plankton and algae, map the ocean floor, track currents, measure temperature and salinity at depth, and locate objects hidden beneath the waves. Campers will collaborate to design and build SeaPerch ROVs. Teams will tackle daily challenges related to real-world marine engineering problems. Navigate through an ROV obstacle course, clean up a simulated polluted waterway, observe bottom- dwelling organisms and more at SeaTech camp! Each day consists of ample time outdoors from an outdoor classroom space, the shore, and aboard our boats.

Partership Camps

PARTNERSHIP CAMPS

Aquarium

Project O & Mystic Aquarium Partnership Camp

Marine Animals and Their Environment

Dates: July 25 - July 29

Grades: 4 - 6

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 4:00pm

Cost Per Week: Aquarium Members: $445; Non-Members: $475

Mystic Aquarium and Project Oceanology are once again teaming up for a week of habitat exploration.  Held at both facilities, three days at Mystic Aquarium then two days at Project Oceanology,  this camp is specially designed for budding marine biologists. Jointly taught by instructors from both organizations, your camper goes on a journey of investigation to discover how animals survive in endangered ecosystems, adapt to invasive species threats and how some animals survive in the deepest depths of the sea.

Environmental Conservation Camp

Dates: July 25 - July 29

Grades: 7 - 10

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 9:00am - 4:00pm

Cost Per Week: Aquarium Members: $445; Non-Members: $475

Back again for another amazing week! Mystic Aquarium and Project Oceanology team up to create an amazing camp! In this week-long program, campers participate in three days of research and exploration aboard Project Oceanology's vessels to discover life in and around Long Island Sound. Then, spend two days at Mystic Aquarium exploring the work being done to protect African penguins, investigate whale snot and learn about efforts to protect horseshoe crabs. Campers spend time on the water, participate in experiments, meet with expert scientists and even go behind the scenes to learn about the many conservation opportunities taking place locally.
