Safety and Security
Project Oceanology is located on the Avery Point Campus of the University of
Connecticut. Campus police are available to us and routinely patrol the
entire campus to ensure everyone's safety. All our vessels are subject to
rigorous standards established by the U.S. Coast Guard. All staff undergo random drug testing, have been finger printed and undergo background checks.
Food Service
A cafeteria with a casual American menu with indoor and outdoor dining is
located in our building. Open Monday-Friday with expanded hours from May to
September. Typical meals include bagels, cereals and eggs for breakfast,
boxed lunches with sandwiches, chips and fruit for lunch. Dinners range from
hamburgers and fries to lasagna and salad. All meals are prepared by
Savories, the food service company that operates the cafeteria. The cafeteria
is inspected by State of Connecticut and University of Connecticut health
officials.
First Aid
Our full time staff are trained in First Aid, CPR and hold lifeguard
certificates.
Weather
Our research vessels trips and field studies take place rain or shine. For safety
reasons, we do not operate our vessels in high winds. We expect participants
to be flexible and adaptive as coastal weather can change rather quickly.
Weather and tide schedules occasionally present opportunities for unexpected
adventures.
Student/Staff Ratio
Our student to instructor ratio varies from program to program. Camp programs are a 1 to 10 ratio and group programs are a 1 to 25 ratio.
Contacting Your Child
If your child is participating in a school program or day camp and you need to
contact them for an emergency situation you may call our main office at
860/445-9007. If your child is at OceanCamp, you may fax a message to them at
860/449-8008 or email them at oceanology@aol.com. For emergency situations
after business hours for residential programs, contact our residential
supervisor at 860/445-9007 ext. 3020.
