NEW INFORMATION FOR SUMMER 2010
In previous years, Project Oceanology took visitors to New London Ledge Lighthouse and we toured inside the building. During the winter of 2009-2010, damage was sustained to the stairs to the lighthouse. While the U.S. Coast Guard repairs the damage we are able to offer a slightly different, but just as informative program about this historic landmark. Our summer 2010 program does not go inside the lighthouse.
New London Ledge Lighthouse has stood guard at the mouth of Thames River since
it was built in 1909. This 2 1/2
hour program begins with a multi-media presentation about
the rich heritage, romance and unique architecture of one of Connecticut's
jewels. After the presentation, participants will board the Enviro-lab for an up-close look at this solitary outpost that has guided many vessels over the years, from wooden schooners to state-of-the-art submarines.
